The first annual Sporting rifle shoot was run at Warminster Number 2 gallery range on Nov 18th Proved to be a challenging and enjoyable event, according to the comments received after it was over! The course of fire is above, so I won’t repeat it but will make some observations which will be taken into account for next year. The times allowed were generous as everyone seemed to shoot pretty quickly. It was suggested that, in order to make it more realistic, the targets might be shown as time-limited exposures to more closely simulate what might be encountered in the field. I thought this was a very sensible idea (can’t think why I didn’t think of it) and this will be what happens next year. I will take advice on exposure times but I suggest that 10 to 15 seconds might be right?? The Fox, of course, proved very difficult at 200m (most, but not all, vermin shooters would not attempt such a shot in reality) and so next year, especially with snap-shooting being the general plan we will do 10 shots at each of the Antelope and Deer at 200m.Congratulations to all those who shot it, especially Ian Griffin who produced an excellent performance. Also to Bob Sweet who shot with iron sights and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you need a scoped rifle for this comp! Can’t understand why he only hit the Fox though, the smallest target??!!
